If you’re visiting Medicine Hat and looking to take in some arts and culture, you might very well find yourself at The Esplanade. Opened in 2005, this remarkable architectural landmark is the city’s premiere space for the visual, theatrical and archival arts. The Esplanade houses an art gallery, museum and 700-seat theatre and features an exciting slate of year-round programming that’s both entertaining and educational.

Need more convincing? Here are three more compelling reasons to put The Esplanade on your Medicine Hat itinerary.

For Entertaining Live Performances

The Esplanade has a diverse line-up of events and exhibitions occurring year-round, and February is no different. Next month, Canadian Jazz singer Tim Tamashiro will be taking the stage and performing a set of classic songs  immortalized by The Rat Pack. You can catch his show on February 14th. Later in the month, the Snowed Inn Comedy Tour will be bringing four internationally acclaimed comedians to the stage for what’s sure to be a night full of laughter. And on March 7th, The Simon and Garfunkel Story will be making a stop on their North American tour, with a thoroughly engaging show that celebrates the music of this iconic duo. You can find out more about these upcoming events at The Esplanade on their website.

To View Inspiring Arts Exhibitions

The Esplanade’s art gallery presents both a permanent collection, highlighting the work of regional artists, and special featured exhibitions throughout the year. Next month, the gallery will showcase a series of works by multi-media artist Susan Sakamoto. A Medicine Hat local, Sakamoto’s work explores questions of family and identity through the Japanese patchwork technique, boro. In February, the gallery will also host The Writing on the Wall which celebrates the life and work of acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Joane Cardinal-Schubert. Her life's work through her paintings and art installations communicate themes of colonialism and environmental destruction.

To Learn about Medicine Hat’s History

The museum at The Esplanade is home to over 25,000 historically important artifacts which commemorate the people and places that have made the city what it is today. The museum also hosts educational lectures, interactive workshops and captivating exhibitions, all with a focus toward celebrating Medicine Hat’s history. During February, visit the Heritage Gallery to learn about the fascinating historical evolution of the art of photography, from pinhole cameras to the modern-day digital single lense reflex (DSLR) cameras.
