WINTER FUN THINGS TO DO IN MEDICINE HAT 2024

  • January 23, 2024

Welcome to the Medicine Hat blog to give you a few ideas of things to do in Medicine Hat in the winter months.  Temperatures will go below freezing but during the day, temperatures will be an average of 5 degrees celsius so do have mitts, toques, comfortable winter footwear BUT the saving grace is that Medicine Hat receives approximately 330 days of SUNSHINE making it one of Canada's sunniest towns!  Who knew?  There is a lot to do in the town and surrounding area, so do enjoy yourself exploring the area's natural beauty and features.

FOR RECREATIONAL FUN, VISIT BIG MARBLE GO CENTRE

The Centre is a lovely building which is fully accessible with ample, free parking and offers public swimming, skating, aqua fitness, and tennis for all ages.  It is a good idea to reserve a spot if you want to play tennis so you don't have to wait for an empty court.  The telephone number is 403-502-8566 and conveniently located.

FOR HIKING, WALKING, AND CYCLING, TRY THE HERITAGE TRAIL NETWORK

Go online to the Heritage Trail Network site which has over 155 plus kilometers of trails for further information.  There are multi-use trails that weave throughout the city and connect trail users to the major parks and green spaces throughout each community.  One can walk, cycle, jog and if you have 4-legged animals as your companions, they are also welcome to enjoy being outside.  Do check the snow conditions as there could be snow so you would want to have the proper footwear.  For further information, go to Tourism Medicine Hat's website or their actual building.  Next to the information centre is the famous SAAMIS TEPEE.

WORLD'S TALLEST TEPEE--SAAMIS TEPEE

As you drive along the Trans-Canada highway, entering Medicine Hat, you cannot miss the world's largest tepee.  It was constructed before the Calgary 1988 Winter Olympics and is quite impressive.  Each of the 10 masts feature a large storyboard depicting various aspects of native culture and history.  The main masts of the tepee measure 215 feet which is the equivalent to a 20 story building with a diameter of 160 feet.  The foundation weight is a total of 800 metric tons.  Check it out during the day but if you have time, do go by at night as the tepee is all lit up and is very impressive.

DON'T MISS BLIZZARD, A FLIP FABRIQUE VISUAL EVENT ON FEBRUARY 28, 2024

If by chance you are in town and want something to see and if tickets are available, try to go and see BLIZZARD, an acrobotic, gymnastic, dance, movement with subdued lighting.  It is a visual movement of complete wonder with performers at the peak of their art and outstanding visual, movement poetry!  It plays only for one night and more information can be found on their website.

Needing a place to stay during your time in Medicine Hat, do check out the DAYS INN site for further information.  The INN provides family-friendly amenities and a warm inviting atmosphere with budget-friendly rates and an unbeatable location in the heart of the city.
